After Warranty Cost of Clutch Replacement

I have a 2009 smart and its only 20 months old. I have 22,000 miles on it. I read in the manual that the clutch is covered by warranty for only 1 year or 12,000 miles.

Right now I have a problem with my car not shifting to Drive or Reverse in the morning. I had the same problem a year ago and the dealership replaced the clutch under warranty.

Does anyone know how much it might cost me to have the dealer replace the clutch in smart car?

P.S. My car is a 2009 with 27,000 miles. I had also purchased the pricey extended 7 yr/120K mi warranty and this was not covered under that either.

Hi - I just encountered the issue of my car not going into "R" - which had been slowly getting worse until two days ago when I had to push the car in "N" to move it. I drove it to the dealer and they updated the computer software at a cost of $50 to me. Given all the recalls with other makes of cars (i.e. Toyotas) I was a little surprised this wasn't covered by smart as their error in the design of the car. Although $50 isn't that much in the world of car repairs, on the principle of it, I would feel more favorable to smart if they took responsibility for this. Being able to drive in reverse (or drive forward) is basic!

I too am having the backup problem, and my clutch has been replaced. I know it has something to do with the computer. If I turn off the car wait to hear the to clicks in the dash, then restart it will then backup. Mine is going to the dealer for its 30,000 mile check up at the end of the month, hopefully they know of this patch and can solve my reverse problem.

Hold off. I just posted this on the "Buzz on the Street" and "Nuts & Bolts" Forum. You might want to follow those up-coming discussions.

I have heard and read much about the infamous PNDR when the car doesn't go into R or D. Mine has those issues too, so I was scheduling a clutch replacement, but received this email from my dealership today 8/6/2010:

"...the good news is, is that Smart gave us a new fix for the Reversing issue. It’s a software patch that takes no longer than an hour to download. This is brand new, as of last week, I believe. Smart recently decided that while replacing the clutch was our initial fix, it may not permanently fix the issue. And while we haven’t seen any evidence of the problem reoccurring after a clutch replacement, Smart attests that the download WILL permanently fix the problem."

Has anybody heard that SMART has this fix and therefore is finally omitting that there is a problem???
