I have heard about the electric Smart, but that is not enough mileage range - is there any plan to bring out a hybrid?

If you are talking about the current (451) model smart it is being replaced late in 2014 by the next generation (453) fortwo. No diesel engine has been mentioned for that car in any market. Really no need for a hybrid or a diesel version if the 453 can get at least 50 mpg. We'll find out when the 453 is released.
Or why the 70mpg diesel isn't allowed to be sold in the US?
