LOST Smart Key!!!!

I know this has NEVER happened to anybody before now..... but I lost my Smart Key!!! I searched everywhere !!!! You would not believe what I when through looking for the KEY! Finally I gave up and got the spare KEY to use.

I called my Smart Car Dealer in JAX to order another KEY. Guess what!!!! A replacement KEY is almost $500.00. JUST for a KEY with a computer chip. If it's got a computer chip why can't they locate my original KEY?????

You have to pay for the new key when you order it, bring in ID, Proof of ownership, your spare key and bring the car before they will configure the New Key.....

I guess if I loose the spare Key I will be SOL....

Comment by jwight on February 23, 2010 at 8:26pm: You can have the metal portion of the key reproduced which will allow you to lock (or is it unlock?) the car mechanically. However, without the chip portion you can't start the car.

Comment by Ryan on February 23, 2010 at 8:11pm: More than likely not. I don't think i've ever seen a place to get keys made that have the type of key the Smart uses.... although i haven't really looked a whole lot.

I believe a lot of the expense comes from the keyfob itself more than just the metal key. And the reason they can't locate it is because the keys don't have a GPS locator..... although i'm mildly surprised nobody tried to modify their keys to have a GPS locator chip in them due to how expensive they are. If i remember correctly, those GPS chips are getting quite small nowadays. Would probably just have to have it powered by the battery in the keyfob.... which might not be the greatest thing, though.
