I've finally found time to document my 2013 expedition: A Smart car trip from San Diego, California to the Arctic Circle (and back).
The details and lots of photos are found on this link:
It was a great adventure which clearly showed that a Smart can handle a wide variety of conditions. I didn't encounter any snow (it was an August trip), but snow did start falling on my northern-most point just a few hours after we started heading south. Mud, rough roads, steep grades, and highway construction were the primary challenges. Great scenery and the fun of driving a Smart were among the rewards.
A lot of preparation went into the trip. Smart Madness had some good winter tires to handle the often-rough highways found in the north. I also carried a substantial spare tire, something I've never done before. Fortunately, it was not needed. The only mishap was a cracked windshield. A rock off the highway caused that as I drove north of Seattle on the Interstate.
This northern expedition pushed the number of states in which I've driven this Smart to 45. The four missing mainland states are on the East Coast. I'm leaving on a cross-country trip in a few weeks and will add those to my completed list. But that is a different story. Stay tuned.
