i reported back in feb 08 this solution to stop and go trans creep and havent revisited since,dont know if this is common knoweledge by now but here goes.....when in stop n go traffic , i manage trans engagament by raising emergency brake one click ,,that keeps the trans from engaging till your ready for it to [ engage ] by dropping the emergency brake handle back down..it keeps the car from wanting to always take off when you only want it to roll to next point of idle traffic when your foot is off the brake..ive been using this technique alot and living in chicago has given me plenty of opportunities to practice....

i shift to N, this stops creep and lowers fuel consumption by a few hundredths of a GPH, the 2.0 flash upgrade significantly reduced the creep (got a bigger battery at the same time) SG2 is a wonderful tool in the smart.

Bob: Why would there be wear and tear on the clutch discs? They're not coming into contact with anything when stopped.

Transmission creep is my friend in stop and go congested traffic...Some things don't need to be "fixed"....

When I come to a stop light I flip the shift lever into neutral, keep my left foot lightly on the brake pedal, watch the light and when the light turns yellow for the cross traffic I shift into drive. Take my foot off the brake pedal, step on the gas and off I go. Very little wear and tear on the clutch discs.

sorry.... but i don't honestly see the point in this. Yes, you're not moving quite as quickly to the next point of idle traffic.... but you're unnecessarily wearing down the brakes just to try to keep the car from moving slightly faster. You're not stopping the transmission from engaging... you're just stopping the tires from moving quite as fast, and putting a bit of strain on the transmission. The reason it "always" wants to "take off" is because... well.... it's a manual transmission. manual transmissions tend to have two types of speed...... stopped, or moving at least as fast as an idling engine will spin the gears. It's the same reason why you can feel the clutch release when you're using the brake to slow down. The car's computer determines that going any slower while still having the clutch disc in contact with the clutch plate could result in a stalling situation, and releases the clutch. When you remove your foot from the brake (such as in the situations you are talking about), without touching the gas pedal, it's doing the same thing that it would do in a car with a manual transmission that you have to shift manually.... pulling out from a stop without any gas pedal interaction. It will still pull out, but the engine will basically be near the lowest possible RPM's before stalling is a possibility.
