What is the age of your car??? Any problems??

Hi everyone!!

It's been quite a while since I have been on this site. I just past my 2 year mark in April with owning my little car. I must say, I am still as happy as ever with it. I am curious tho, how many of you out there have had your little car for at least 2 years, and are YOU still as happy today as you were when you got yours? Have you had any problems? If so, what are they? Please let me know. I get a little concerned with the age of my car and how many problems, if any, I will have. I never hear anything about owners who have had their cars for over 2 years. Thank you all in advance for your responses!!

Comment by Pasde2 on September 9, 2011 at 10:07am: Picked up mine Sept 17, 2008. One year later 8/18/09 and 3k miles over warrantee, I had to pay for a new clutch. I've had all the software updates to fix the R problem which none of them have fixed. I'm at 83K miles now. I love my car and would not get rid of it. If I ever need something to replace this car, it most likely will not be the same.

So far I have had to replace both tail light bulbs and both headlight bulbs and had a nail removed from a tire. I totally love this car and will probably never own any other brand. I am thinking about purchasing a new one next year.

Comment by jwight on September 7, 2011 at 10:30am: FWIW, car companies (even Mercedes) don't automatically recall every defect or problem; M-B issued several software updates to address certain shifting issues and it's possible one of those may correct the problem with your car. Only six weeks out of warranty, it's possible smart USA may help out on the repair - you may have to elevate the issue to get that to happen.

With tons of blogs online about the issue, Smart USA doesn't seem to be concerned at all. No recalls. My warranty has been over for six wks - the problem began yesterday. I was driving along & all of a sudden, the car seems to think it's in N. Once I turned the car off, it wouldn't start again & the dreaded three bars appeared. We tried the "teach-in" fix & it worked, but temporarily before acting up again. It was a problem in the 2008 model - an upgrade was provided for a fix. Smart USA should recall the 2009 model due to this obvious defect.

Had a couple of minor problems, windshield squirter corroded, 1 amber light in front needed replaced. I will be needing my 50K checkup within 6 months so am anxious to see how the "new" service centers handle my business. I am still averaging 40-41 mpg with almost all highway driving. For those 'experts' who dissed these little cars because they didn't do any good on the highway I say WRONG. You just have to know how to drive and handle them - they are not a race car.

Comment by Marco Papa on July 3, 2011 at 3:28pm: Had the Smart cabriolet for 2 years. No problem whatsoever except that I had to substitute two bulbs of the, br.eak lights, which I did myself. I still do 35/45 and at over $4 / gallon I feel pretty good.

Comment by Bob Maynard on June 30, 2011 at 12:22am: I have had my car for almost 2 and a half years. I have only had a few minor problems. One time it wouldn't go into gear. I took it back to the dealer and it required a simple adjustment, and another time one of the turn signal lights went out, and had to be replaced. The service center where i bought the car had to do that, since it is difficult for get to the lights. I still love the car, so much that I ordered a new one 3 months ago.

Comment by Jan in West U on June 15, 2011 at 2:45pm: Three years was March 5th. I had a few of the first year (early 2008) problems, e.g. shifting and a/c. Warranty covered those before her second birthday. I'm still a VERY HAPPY owner. I love zipping around in traffic and finding great parking places.

Comment by Kevin Causey on June 14, 2011 at 7:29pm: I've had mine for 2 1/2 years, just getting very close to 50K miles. Since it's a commuter, I've had a windshield replaced. I also broke one of the latches to lower the rear gate (bad design imho, when loading in through the window you can catch a latch and break it).

Only recently have I had some issues with the shifter motor. I can't get it into any gear, but restarting the car has solved it every time. I'll ask on my 50K service in the next week or so.

Happy? it's still a consistent 40mpg, comfortable to drive, doesn't get scratched, and is really easy to park (lol). I'd get an electric if they offered 100 mile range on a single charge.
