Hi Dora! Sorry I didn't reply sooner... my phone does not like smart insider. That's so cool your daughter saw my car. What a "small" world! hee-hee! Yea, we have been missing each other... I have been so busy with roller derby I can't make it out to meetngreets! hopefully we will meet soon!
i've been a "hypermiler" for over 30 years, i had to drive 40 miles a day 30 years ago in a '68 pontiac catalina 4 door with a 400 cubic inch V8 and got 16mpgs with that monster.
i might make a cross-country video next year, seattle to boston at 50+mpgs, if you watch youtube, look up "10mph segway", it's a 90 minute movie going across the US on a segway at 10mph, i'll do the same trip with my smart at 50+mpgs.
i'll do it at 50+mpgs, i have a director's account on youtube, and can post videos longer than 15 minutes and get 5 weeks vacation a year to do this. i'll do the same thing next year, by myself, without a support team. it'll be a change, i usually vacation in vegas.
if you have the scan gauge, i find that keeping to 1.3 gallons per hour maximum is best for acceleration. there are two theories, i've "hot-rodded" a few times, it's hard to compare accelerating at 2.1 gallons per hour for a shorter acceleration time over the lesser rate. also, i have heavier, oversize wheels and tires, which really hurt economy during acceleration, but once cruising speed is achieved it's about the same, i've been running larger wheels and tires for the last 11,000 miles.
i usually shift manually @ 8-10mph first, 16-20 second, 26-30 third and final shift at 34-38, let it downshift by itself during decellerations. once ambient temps are over 70F, i log 50+mpgs in all trips, it's the cooler temps and longer warm-up times that kill mileage with the smart, when it's winter, i'm stuck at 40mpgs. my exhaust is loud enough that only the older and probably deaf people ask if it's electric (most electric questions occurred at the gas station while filling up, we are a nation of complete morons... duh, i'm putting $4 a gallon gas into this car for giggles!)
i made a video with another camera a week before, it was not suitable to post, the wind noise was hellatious and the "autofocus" went between the road and gauge, i have ordered a better camera mount and will post a better video in 2 weeks (ordered from hong kong...) i have to play around, maybe lock the focus, and i might get a video with traffic too, it was very sunny and the sun killed the view through the windshield. a change in the camera mount and placement should make a better video.
I thought I had joined, I would love to become part of the Houston group..... I see they have an event in Old Town Spring next weekend but I will be out of town... would love to had gone.... let me know what I need to do to join up :)
Thank You! Funny thing, I THOUGHT I was a member this whole time!! That is so cool!! Can you send me a link to that SCOA site you mentioned?? I'd love to check it out. I have had some people ask me about St. Arnold's, like if I work for them, or advert for them.
